As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
