European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
